- Being able to tell a balanced, consistent, reflective story about your past that holds the good and the bad together, without either idealizing it or angrily dwelling on it.
- narrative identity
- The internal, evolving life story a person builds to give their life unity, purpose, and meaning — the sense of who I am, told as a story.
- narrative integration narrative coherence
- Working a fragmented, emotionally charged memory into a person's wider life story — building an organized account of self, others, and what occurred.
- need for accommodation
- The second ingredient of awe: the mind scrambling to update its existing understanding so it can take in something too vast to fit what it already knows.

- Controlling, pressuring behavior that blocks a person's basic psychological needs instead of supporting them — the opposite of need-supportive behavior.
- negative affect reciprocity
- The retaliatory chain in conflict where one partner's criticism draws a counter-criticism, which draws a colder reply, each turn raising the emotional temperature.
- negative cycle the cycle
- In couples therapy, a self-reinforcing loop where one partner's protest triggers the other's withdrawal, which deepens the protest — the pattern, not the partner, being the problem.
- negative reciprocity
- The tendency to answer a partner's negative move with a negative one of your own — meeting a complaint with a counter-complaint — so that negativity feeds on itself.

- The soured version of that frame, where even a neutral act gets read as a slight because the overall feeling toward the relationship has gone bad.

- The view that neurological variation is a natural, valuable form of human diversity rather than a set of disorders to be cured, rejecting the idea of one 'normal' brain.
- neuroticism
- A basic personality trait describing how readily and strongly a person experiences negative emotions like worry and irritation — a research term, not an insult or diagnosis.

- A person's particular style of neurological wiring — the broad pattern of how their brain handles attention, the senses, and social information. Autism and ADHD are two distinct neurotypes.

- Describing a person whose brain works in the way a culture treats as standard or expected — not autistic, ADHD, or otherwise neurodivergent.
- non-apology
- A statement shaped like an apology — "I'm sorry you feel that way" — that keeps responsibility outside the speaker instead of owning any part of the act.

- Not conditional on getting something back or on one's own mood — care given freely rather than as payment, debt, or a fear of disappointment.

- Hearing a complaint about yourself without instantly denying, justifying, or hitting back — staying the person listening rather than becoming the person on trial, so the conversation stays open.

- Touch offered with no expected outcome and no obligation to lead to arousal, orgasm, or intercourse — leaving it free to simply stay touch.
